My knee first swelled up a few weeks ago. There was no pain at all, just some fluid around the outside of the joint. It went away after a while, but now it has returned. Again, there is no pain what so ever and I have a full ROM. My Doc tells me that there is no cartilage damage. Unfortunately he wasn't too specific on what else it could be. He said that it may be damage to the fluid sacks around the joint, or maybe some trauma to my patella tendon.

Now then, what methods do you know of, (other than spending money that I don't have) that could help me diagnose my problem?

I'm not sure if this would be a factor, but my quads are weak in comparison to my hams.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, as always.

Edit: It may be important to add that the swelling is no visible when my leg is straight, only when I bend it.

It sounds to me like prepatellar bursitis. An old basketball team mate of mine had very similar symptoms to yours; and was diagnosed with it.

Is the area tender to the touch? Or is it warm?

When you squat and if you use knee wraps; it is advisable to do a double wrap around where the patella tendon joins again after going around the kneecap.

The best course of action (I know from talking to this guy) is to just take it easy. It will only cause a real issue if the area becomes infected. I would say wait for it to subside before going heavy on it. If it becomes a recurring issue then there could be a more serious underlaying condition.

I am not a doctor so do not take my word for it lol.

It doesn't seem to be tender at all. I can tap it quite hard without any pain or discomfort, what so ever. No increase in temperature, either. This is a part of the problem - it feels and looks absolutely fine! Well, up until I squat below parallel, then it swells up a tad, and feels 'full'.

I don't use knee wraps, however I will be for the next couple of weeks. Will make sure that the tendon is nice and snug, nice one!

I guess going easy will force me to work on my form, which can't be a bad thing at all.

    Cheers, MJ

Edit: My knee is starting to feel warmer than the other. Will be keeping a close eye on it.

A housemaid is probably stronger then the average office grunt, if that makes you feel a tiny bit more manly!

You're probably right there. Male genitalia restored! Not that my genitalia can be popped on and off, like Mr Potato Heads parts.

If you've not seen it already, this is probably worth a look...

Go to a physio i'd say, but in the mean time; Rest. Ice. Compression. Elevation, NSAID it up to relieve some of the inflamation and wrap your knees up tight with some heavy duty wraps whilst squatting deep. That's just to give it some relief and hopefully allow the inflammation to dissipate.
