I don't have a training partner so have no spot for bench pressing or squatting. Will it be better for me to do these exercises at a lighter weight or to do a different exercise (dumbell press/smith machine squat) where I can control the heavier weights better?

    Cheers

You'll find that if you ask someone near by - especially someone else whos benching, to give you a spot they'll never say no. Its a good way to make some good friends at the gym.

I've never had a training partner and I have no issues with asking for a spot.

<EDIT> I assume you're training at a gym and not at home?

Or if you dont have a spot, and nobody is nearby to spot you, just dont lift to failure. DB's will only work for so long untill its to much of a jump to the next weight - usually on your weaker arm, barbells are easier for microloading.

Squat within your limits and you don't need a spot, just don't go trying a 1 rep max and you'll be fine. In my gym i can just dump the weight if i need to whilst squatting so its not a problem.
Using this code with your first order will make you a ripped machine. Use with the up most of care!
