Why on earth did I avoid them for so long.

Tis now one of the highlights of my workout, i'm only adding two 25 kilo plates on either side of the bar which is pretty but it wasn't that many weeks ago where the just the Oly bar was giving me hamstring hobble to the extreme!

My legs just feel a lot more balanced.

Probably the most relevant strength exercise there is - picking something heavy off the floor. Should be the foundation of anyone's routine.

Know how you feel, my old gym had no facility whatsoever to do them (unless I wanted to use dumbbells...which went up to a maximum of 30kg!)

New one has oly bars and plenty of discs, have started gently while I try to get the form, (70kg discs) watched plenty of video's before hand and felt really good coming up, didn't quite feel as natural bringing it down, think i need to look into that more, not so much a problem with light weights but as it gets heavier i don't know to knack me back!

If you use the stop-reset method between reps (it has a bette name but my brain isn't working yet), then you can get away with 'dropping' the weight a bit at the end of the rep, then reset and go again. Be careful as some commercial gyms don't like too much noise. Ruins the ambience apparently.

I know what you mean about the noise, it gets in the way of all the brahs talking to their ladies on their mobiles while sat in the squat racks with their dumbbells

I got told off for doing barbell split squats. Wasnt having any of that and kept doing them. Apparently its "not safe." Yeh but the guy wearing flip flops and sunglasses is. I guess the PT was scared as i was using the squat rack of which he knows nothing about.

I dont like deadlifts. I used to try the classic deadlift form and towards the end i was getting it but it didnt agree with me. I do single leg variations and like them a lot; so one day i might go back to the usual deadlifts but the single leg variations are working fine for me. (Really helped with balance!) For powerlifters and bodybuilders they are pretty much the core exercise.

Split squats for me are still my fav exercise by far!

that will be called the 'dead'lift lol. the other method where you don't reset i've never heard a proper name for them but people refer to them as touch and go deadlifts.
