I've heard that newbies can increase muscle/strength and lose body fat at the same time. Is this true?

Can it be done on a calorie surplus, i.e. eating to gain mass and strength?

Yes and Yes. I believe Ripptoe suggests that you can produce 'steroid like' results in your first few months as a novice.

BUT it has to be on the right type of programme, with the right type of nutrition.

I highly doubt it'd be as severe as he says, but you can definitely achieve muscle gain and body fat loss.

I'm going to be using the Stronglifts 5x5 program and eating between 300-500kcals over my maintenance (clean, no junk food: lean mean, fruit, veg, nuts, olive oil, oats and milk).

Theres no need to bump this.

I answered you and there is plenty of info on the net. The stronglifts site answers most questions - have you actually read it all?

yes you defo will lose weight and gain muscle at the same time. I lost a fair ammount of fat but retained a simular sort of weight meaning i would have put some muscle on and i feel fat more toned.

Diet is the crux of gaining mass whilst shifting fat, that's not to say training isn't important, it is very easy during newbie gains and even possible in more advanced trainers. Being 100% strict and consistent is key.
