I'd personally shy away from using the smith machine! I dont have a squat rack at my gym either, when i started out i used to powerclean the bar then do half a bradford overhead press to get it over onto my back. This was while doing a 20 rep squat program, so the weight wasn't too high at first. Bit dangerous i know, but definitely saw some extra benefits from it as far as my shoulders were concerned! When i got up to squatting 65kg i began to struggle with getting the bar over my head so got two people, one either side of the bar, to lift it up and onto my back. Works absolutely perfectly as a human squat rack! haha.
Thanks for the replys guys! appreciate it![]()
Hey, first post here but i've been lurking around for quite a while leeching the good advice so i thought i'd better contribute my 2 pence.
I used to be at a gym where there was no squat rack either and did use the smith however not for long because it does as others have said here put your body in an unnatural posistion (if im not mistaken it become almost like a leg press movement, but someone might correct me on that lol). Does your gym have a dip station, because another way of dealing with it would be to lay the oly bar over the station if its high enough to allow you to get under properly (now i know this isn't ideal but its just something ive seen a few guys do in the past and its better than not squatting at all). But to be honest if you can and there's a gym near you that has a rack it would be WELL worth changing.
Anyway good luck with the training!
