Agreed, my form never feels good on the smith, I much prefer the free weights.
Get a new gym.

some people prefer to use a smith, I use one as old injuries mean I find it difficult to squat free weight so I use a smith and put my feet further forward, it works for me, basically I think it is personal opinion, it depends on the feel for you and also flexibility etc..... obviously only my opinion!!
Smith machine hurt my back. Not seriously, but enough pain to realise my body doesn't want to move in the range of motion that the machine forces it into
power clean and then do front squats. or hack squats

Not so sure that powercleans would be a good shout for a beginner, or even for an advanced lifter that has not been shown properly(hence why I stopped!). Powercleans are more for power off the floor, not muscle building. Stiff legged deadlifts would be a much better shout.
