    Hi everyone,

I was watching world's strongest man on tv and as one of the competitors (I forget who it was) was getting ready for the car squat the camera panned onto him and he was licking what looked like a Rizla paper! I guessed there was a kind of powder on it. He threw it on the floor and then started lifting.

Does anyone know what this is? I assume it's allowed as the commentators didn't mention it...

    Cheers!

He was sniffing it. They're smelling salts. They clear your head give you a bit of a jolt to help you focus etc.

I can imagine you would use them if you were about to deadlift a load of cars or throw barrels over your head. I can't see it being necessary for most gym goers

Smelling salts, basically make you go absolutely mental - a slap in the face, in a bottle. Many PL'ers use them(i'm trying them tonight), and I think Dope has used them before a fight. No, I wouldn't say that the average joe needs to use these.

They're mostly used at a powerlifting meets or something similar hence the guy using them before the heavy lifts in WSM. Occasionally people use them before 1 or 3 RM training PRs or something but not often. I also don't really know a huge amount about them lol.

thanks for the help. i don't think they'd help me cos i do some climbing for that you need strength but also coordination and I think a high state of arousal from the salts would destroy that..

If your not a pro or very good at powerlifting, strongman etc, just have an espresso!
"Squatting on a Bosu ball makes it so much more challenging!" So does getting tapped in the balls while squatting, want me to do that too?

    smelling salts are ace!

i use them lots, even at work, if you are feeling a bit blocked up, a quick blast, your sinuses open up a treat, but they are agonising if you aren't used to them. you don't need them, but you dont' need lots of things, and what is life without whimsy.

plus, i had a cold years ago, took my smelling salts to the pub, so i could breathe enough to drink my beer, and some old 'geezer', asked if he could have a whiff of my poppers, you should have seen his face, i genuinely thought steam would come out of his ears.
