I've actually just done what you've started. I trained hard for 6 months and put on 16ibs, but the gains really slowed down and the beer and spicy noodles were calling me.
I stopped completley for 3 months. I only dropped 3ibs in weight, but alot more in strength.
Now i've started up again though, it has all come back very quicky (think it is known as muscle memory) and hopefully it will shock my muscles into some new growth again!
Before my break I stopped getting DOMS virtually, now they're back with a vengeance! I also lost alot of enthusiasm, and as a result wasn't putting enough effort in.
A break never hurts anyone, it is good for regaining motivation too.

I've stopped for 3 months due to my shoulder, I've dropped 11lbs.
Ive not stopped training and i dont drink, its just the lack of sleep thats killing me really.

try being first year at uni mate... i've had to stop going out more then once a week, gets ridiculous otherwise. 4/5 hours of sleep a night 3 times a week just isnt good for training, add alcohol into the equation and its gameover.
Don't wish it was easier; wish you were better
Your huge mate your genetics are all good.
Try to get more sleep!
And eat more to offset the no sleep, i know its not really going to work but with less sleep more calories will reduce the likely hood of over training.
I also wanted to say what immense proggress you have made!
Its nuts to think that little fat lad was you.
I'm going to knock the drinking on the head for maybe two weeks, but there's no way i'll ever cut it as this stage of my life as it's too much for socially.
Besides the calories and testosterone lowering negatives, it ruins my diet for the following day as i'm too rough to eat anything proper.
