It looks like I'm going to have to have surgery on my shoulder to fix a injury called bankart lesion. If so then I don't think I could get back seriously in the gym untill about 2-3 months after the operation. Will this have a very bad effect on my training I mean how much muscle and strength could I lose? Has anyone else gone this sort of period without training?

    Cheers

Never gone more than 3 weeks.

My advice would be to keep your cals high to hang onto as much muscle as poss.

Could you not train legs ? Just by squatting twice a week you would hold onto a bit of muscle.

Try and train the legs if possible then slowly get back into training fully.

The main thing is that your shoulder is sorted rather than holding onto muscle and training.

    Also, maybe try BCAA?

Lots of protein (3g/kg +), supplementation and keeping your test levels high (no drinking, plenty of sleep, plenty of saturated fats) will all help.

You can't worry about how much strength and size you'll lose, you just have to do everything you can to minimise it. Muscle memory will mean you'll get back your losses pretty quickly anyway

Just had 2 months off myself, my squat and deadlifts only feel slightly weaker dropping from 3x165kg to 3x150kg on the squat and 2x220kg to 2x200kg on the deadlift, but my chest, arms and shoulders took the brunt of it, DB presses dropped from repping 42's to struggling to push 3x 40kg and preacher curls dropped a good 10kg for 10 reps.. hoping should regain it pretty fast but its annoying right now.

So i guess it varys from bodypart to bodypart.

    PB's :Bench 120kg x 2 (110kg x 5), Squat 200kg x 2 (170kg x 5), Deadlift 240kg x 1 (180kg x5)

I've had a staggered 10months of being off training

Strangely started with an operation on my nuts! Tried to come back as quick as possible as i'd lost 4kgs (a hard earned 4kgs i might add through my HST 10s) From this i basically wrecked my shoulder and knee, probably poo form but continued on anyway. Had various short breaks to try and work out what was wrong, meanwhile the gym was going terrible.

At the moments im just back from a 2month complete layoff. Only doing cardio, core work and rehab for my shoulder. Knocked my AC joint outta place through rugby 3 or 4years ago.

My two cents would be: Eat big like the guys before me have said, i suffered as I literally died in bed eating nothing as i was in dire pain (how could they not give me painkillers?!)

But also take it VERY slow. A major problem among BB, PL, hell all athletes is to get straight back to training. I learned the hard way and am severely paying the price. Take a few weeks off then start in again doing cardio/core work/rehab for your shoulder. Im sure the docs will have excercises for you to perform or seek the advice of a physio

Your 17 years of age, My advice and its serious advice. Do not even worry about your training. Recover from your op.....Be honest with the surgeon and tell him you train. He will probably as a typical surgeon just say 'be careful & do not train'.

He may be correct, I'd lay a bet not unless he deals with people that do train. So do listen & do take on board what he says.

However above all listen to your own body. This will be something I'll almost guarantee you cannot do yet. Just due to your age! Thats all!

Your wanting to get in there & go for it!!!! Am I correct? **nod your head**

I've been there & done it. Look at the long term, your 17, have many years to progress, grow & learn.

So if you NEED to take 1 month, 2 months or even 6 months out from training to recover take it now!

Rather than be impatient and have your progress knocked back 3 or 4 years!!

You have years ahead of you .

Agreed- Even though its really boring being away from the gym. I sometimes cant wait to go in and do a certain part of my workout... it is better to lay and rest as you dont want long term effects. You dont want to be in a situation like a guy a couple posts up where he still has problems.

Some people get away with it by not taking enough time off and end up fine... theyre just lucky, its better to be sensible in the long run. You still have a long time to bodybuild!

Ok so it now looks like I might need shoulder reconstruction which takes upto 6 months...the news just keeps getting better. Will muscle memory allow me to get back my gains easy after that sort of lay off?

    Time off - 3 months
Weight loss - Approximately 11lbs WITH slight fat gain.

Be prepared to see visual differences, for example my tshirts sleeves are now loose around my arms (they weren't tight tight before, but my arm filled the hole completely).
Mentally it will be hard, it certainly put me on a downer.

    All the best.
