Not to become obese or skinny-fat because it is a miserable look to have and I thnk people look down on people who are overweight/ have a strange body shape. Maybe the answer is, "to fit in to society".
I have come accross a few motivations for bodybuilding but I'm sure there must be more I don't know about (as I mainly work out at home). the ones I know of so far are:
- To look hard (like Jean Claude Van Damme 'hard', not hard like stones and whatnot).
- To look attractive to other men, women, or oneself.
- 'Bigorexia' (an extension of the previous motivation)
What other motivations have you come accross?
Wuss.
Through clothes, moobs look as good as pecs.

I originally started to supplement some martial arts training I was doing. I since quit training and now just lift. Some motivations for continuing lifting (in no particular order):
* I love lifting. Yep, I actually enjoy being in the gym lifting heavy things. I still haven't got over the thrill of "wow, I can actually lift that now" that came with the beginner gains. I kinda hope that one will never wear off.
* Once in a while I need to move something heavy, and I actually can.
* I did yoga for years, and the whole "you are what you eat" hippy philosophy never seemed to sink in. Oddly enough, there's something down to earth about lifting that made it sink in. Like someone saying to me "no mate, you really ARE what you eat". So, I'm healthier as a result of lifting.
* In a subtle way, people respond better to me. I'm in no way a big bloke yet, but people are more polite, more patient when I screw up and I get shoved a hell of a lot less on the tube.![]()

I agree with CF and SH, I also like feeling like it makes me better than 95% of the people around me.
