    Hi Guys,

As part of my series of interviews I caught up with Layne a few weeks back to talk diet, training, and more (no supplement talk btw), the interview also contains the trailer to his DVD and a tonne of great pictures which show the development a natural trainee can attain with enough dedication and hardwork!

The interview can be found here:

Nice one Skye, thanks for that.

Been following Layne for a while, I really like his approach to weight training and diet. His PHAT workout looks hardcore!

Also like/agree with his view of IF (entire forum looks in disgust)

"Skye: Intermittent fasting is becoming popular and people have been reporting great results without that “I’m on a diet feeling”, what’s your view on intermittent fasting?
Layne: I think that by and large it's not bad. I think that you can certainly get lean doing it, but I do not think you will optimize your muscle mass on it. "

Agree with his view on IF, although, for most people that use it, it provides 'freedom'

    Cheers for the interview/link, Skye.

IF is brilliant for fat loss, it practically does it for you but for muscle growth im still to be convinced on that front as I know a few have done it and seen next to zero mass results on it, that said havent done IF, just doesnt ring with me whereas the traditional 16 hour feed time does.

IF does not "do it for you" You still need an overall energy deficit to lose fat.

And if by having a constrained eating window you struggle to eat enough to gain mass, then yes, you could view IF as detrimental to muscle gain. Of course, this depends on what form of IF we're talking about...

Plus, what's "traditional" about 16hrs of feeding per day? It's a by-product of the industrial revolution and people having to grab food when they could, which just so happens to be breakfast (am), lunch and dinner.

I'm no IF fanboy, as I realise it's limitations, but a lot of the crap that gets spouted about it is wrong.

    Glad you all enjoyed.

I have to agree with respect to IF. I got my abs finally using IF but now that I'm bulking again the scale just isn't moving up with IF using low carb low calorie rest days and high carb, overfeeding on workout days.

Martin seems to get results for muscle gain so perhaps its because we're all interpreting the macros ourselves but to be honest theres no real secrets in IF. It's regular macros just crammed into the 8 hour window.

Regarding Layne's PHAT workouts, I think it would be too much volume for your average trainee, I'm personally using Lyle's Generic Bulking routine on a 3 day ABA BAB split and its working out well.

Martin uses no secret formulae for calories when setting up a diet for bulking or cutting with his clients. The method he employs generally is for MINIMAL fat gains, so it is quite common to see 0.25-1lbs of weight gain per month when using his guidelines. I think that IF does indeed work for gains, but as water weight and other such things can mask such lean gains each month, people get inpatient or think nothing is happening.

This is, of course, in my own experience with the protocols.

I think you're right. I was certainly leaner during my bulk using the on-off underfeed/overfeed method and I'm softer looking since I bumped carbs up to 100g per day calories to maint on off days.

With that said, the freedom of being able to eat carbs 7 days a week has been liberating and I'm actually even considering breakfast again!

I think the key is finding something you can PERSONALLY stick too, to get results. Damn, eat when you please as long as you hungry, the take away point is, just don't stress if you miss a meal!
