about 3 years ago in the gym when i diddnt know better, i went for a deadlift way out of my leauge, cant rember the exact weight but it was north of 140kg easily. bearing in mind at this point i had very little gym experience. went in for the lift picked up the bar and it felt like i had been shot in the lower back. and the pain went shooting up the spine. instead of doing the sensible thing and putting the weight down i carryed on with the lift until i was vertical. dropped the weight and nearly passed out on the incline bench next to me. must of been lying there for 10 mins. diddnt want to make an exibition of myself so i stayed quiet. well since then my back has never been the same, and ive tweeked it at some awkward times. during sex, in a job interview, even just getting out of my chair. ive deadlifted recently, with perfect form only doing 100kg and my back cant take it. i dont get any pain realy when im doing barbell rows or t bar rows or any other backworkout. but its a pain that will go away for months and then hit me again. its always slightly to the left side, like a trapped kind of pain it can make me feel like im going to throw up. i had it realy bad on the plane a while back felt like my spine was compressing. i know i,ll probably never deadlift again. basicly the question is do any of you get this kind of pain? or are there any experts with some advice? or is it time to vist the doc

First of all go see your doctor!!!

Secondly, have a look at this article - Myprotein Community & Forums - Why You Have Lower Back Pain, and How to Fix It, surprising good from MP considering the latest selection. Foam rollers are fantastic, great tool for back pain and poor posture.

However I would really go see a doctor about it, you should not get any pain sitting on a plane. Sounds like you might need to work on your form too but that can be addressed when you have sorted out your back problems

Doing foam rolling and stretch work has helped my back come on leaps and bounds after a deadlift injury last year/year before (forgot when exactly). Correct warm-ups before gym sessions also reduce risk of injury and improve ROM in the exercises.

I hurt my back seriously about 6 years ago whilst training in the gym, I couldn't bend down to put my socks on for 3 months. I have never completely recovered and I can not squat with a lot of weight or go too heavy on deadlifts. Because I have scar tissue I use SMR (self myofacial release) which has helped to break it down, you can use a foam roller, hockey or golf ball too. I would go to the doctors and get checked out to make sure it is just muscular damage and nothing structural.

Although I have a bit of a problem with it tightening up after a lot of squats and deadlifts it doesn't bother me very much now, It has taken me 6 years to get to this point though. I wouldn't worry too much as it will get better, the doctor will probably refer you to a physio on the NHS for some sessions and that will be a positive start.

the lower back isn't somehing to self diagnose or through the internet, tis a bit too risky if you make it worse or like elmo said if its not a muscle issue and more of the bones and ligaments.

i,ll leave it the docs hands now, get it sorted and hopfully if not fix it, get it improved. its not a massive cripilng injury but still a weak area that could become a severe gym threating injury, and i have first hand experience with ignoring stuff, had tonsilitus so bad a year ago it nearly killed me (no joke)

it being gym threatening would be the least of your worries. what matters is that it doesn't affect your personal, work, family life and your future. there are ways to work around the issue, but thats only with your dr's ok. quite a few of us have had training related injuries to various bodyparts/ joints, myself included.
