my gym is a good gym but it has one major problem, no squat rack it has the smith machine that everyone loves to hate. Now i have made good progress but feel like im cheating. now i know there are dumbell squats etc but i just wanted to know if cable squats would be a better alternative?

i have even tried laying the bar across the dip station but its not working out well for me, oh and i cant change gyms just yet im in a contract.

    thanks
    kez.

If you have noticed good progress with no injury or niggles doing what your doing, then why do you consider it as cheating?

    If it ain't broke....etc

true, but when you read around a lot of stuff and the bad rep that the smith gets it feels like you shouldnt be using this machine. i do like using it personally and find the position my body is in really comfy. I will though give the cable version a go just for variation.

I've used the barbell version which worked pretty well once I learned how to set it up and get a good range of motion.

What are you training for? Strength? Size? Endurance? Power? As different training Methods will increase gains, whilst still using the same equipment.
