    Hi all,

I being a bit slack with the deads of late due to cutting.(i know **** excuse ), but wanting to get back into them.

I've done deads differently over the years and have had different results. I used to start much higher in the lift eg thighs at a 45 degree angle, which brought more back into it. Meathead and jonathan seem to do this way(with good results). I eventually stopped doing it this way cos my spine felt like it was going to eject a disc at any moment!!

so now i tend to start off with legs almost parallel to the ground, i can't lift as much but it feels safer.

what do you think is the best way traditional wise cos i'm not bothered about sumos.

meat and other powerlifters - Which style is the most common in powerlifting?

    cheers mat

Well, for starters I think that this should be in the power and strength bit!

Everyones deadlift form varies according to their body shape and physiology. I too do not deadlift, with conventional form, with the hips higher. I deadlift using semi sumo, get my hips quite low, look up and try to drive with my legs. I think that the style that you are using at the moment is fine, but all the best deadlifters tend to use more back than legs, so it is something to bear in mind if you are planning to shift considerable poundages in the future.

I did start writing the thread in the powerlifting section but i'm a bodybuilder and bodybuilders do the lift as well
yep when i did them last week my thighs were burning!! and couldn't lift much at all. If you look at those vidz on youtube you'll see some of those guys just walking up to the bar and doing what looks like a stiff leg dead lift with about 10 plates a side on ...... that can't be good for the back or am i just being a wuss

don't you feel load of pressure on ya lower back?

i myself just get into the most comfortable position, this means for me means i use my back and legs equally. i simultaneously drive with my legs and pull with my back.
this feels really safe and im sure you could progress nicely with this style.

When i was doing some research on the history of deadlifting for my final year dissertation, it seemed that both sumo and convetional styles of deadlift were pretty equal in popularity among the national and international arenas.

Conventional and rack deadlifts (from just below shins)

Your back routine should revolve around them and their varients

    An excellent post about DL:

Sumo DLs will work your legs more and will put less stress on your back. You can do Good mornings and Sumo DLs if you don't feel comfortable with DLs.

5% off on your first order? MP10238 code: Just use it!
