    hi

my question to you is that do you really need fitness equipment to become more fitter and increase muscle tone, or do you think it is better to get this via more fun methods such as basketball

    that do you think?

If you want to be bigger your need equipment. If you just want to be healthy and cardio fit then sport is fine and dandy for that.
By the way lifting is fun!

Depends how fit you want to become, sports will only really train your body to a certain level before it becomes accustomed to the activity level and has no reason to develop further, the less fit you are the more useful sports and activitied are. Weight lifting, interval training, etc. will develop your strength/CV ability/aesthetics in less time, but sports are probably fine for maintaining fitness.
