How much muscle is it reasonable to build up in a week?
I know it is easy to put on weight, but not all of this , if any, is muscle - I've heard 1lb a week used as a guide when bulking, but is it reasonable to put on more?
    Thanks in advance

To gain 1pound of lean muscle a week would be exellent, but i say "lean muscle"

I would say that a 1pound a week gain would be good maybe 2pounds but as you know it wouldnt be all muscle.

Thanks for that, I was going to use the figure in calculating my daily calorie intake. I'm chasing the Holy Grail a bit, I'm after a diet that will let me lose fat whilst putting on muscle at the same time.

Easier to bulk first then cut-
    muscle gain = calorie surplus
    fat loss = calorie deficit
can't do both at the same time

After experiencing initial beginner gains, to gain lb of muscle a week is highly unlikely.

Think of it in terms of how much that would be a year?

52lbs! ie not far off 4 stone! That is a lot of muscle to gain in one year!

I would think 0.5lbs of lean muscle gained weekly is excellent progress.
MP5500 for 5% off first order!

That's what I was thinking, 1 lb did seem a lot. As Bison said 0.5 would be excellent. and as pausk said you can't do both (hence my Holy Grail analogy) so I believe it will be best to use trial and error. I'll keep you informed

Fat percentage isn't the same as overall fat though. So you don't need a calorie deficit to lower bodyfat percentage as long as you're gaining weight with a high muscle to fat ratio - which is still difficult/borderline impossible of course.
