So i'm in the gym last tuesday which for me is leg day, I always do some leg extensions first to warm up then go to the squat rack. I then do some light sets first before moving in to 3-4 working sets. But on this particular day the pain in my knees was unbareable. I suppose when i look back i had noticed slight pain every now and again but it would always go away after my first working set so was never a problem. So as you can imagine i'm doing my nut not being able to squat, i figured i'll take 2 weeks away from squatting and just use the leg press, leg extension, etc.

I'd like to know what others have done in this situation ?

How long was it before you could squat again ?

Was there any supps that helped ?

What would you consider to be the best method to work around this problem until its better ?

    Rep power to best response.

The leg eqtension is FAR harder on the knees than squatting. Cut those out first!

But i'm only doing a couple of light sets as a warm up, i don't think leg extensions are responsible for the pain.

leg extensions are an awful exercise.

you want to warm up for squatsso do squats as a warm up too.

I do a set of squats with nothing on a bar at first just to warm up its the best way for me. It also then warms up the lower back and other areas

I stretch, do 1 set of the bar alone, stretch, 1 set @ 50%, stretch, 1 set @ 50%, then stretch again before my 3 working sets

stretching that much will reduce the force production of the muscles. That is overkill for stretching. I wouldn't personally stretch before any exercise, wont necessarily prevent injury.

Whether you use light weight or no weight in the leg extension, you should not fully lock out your knees. You may have a meniscal tear or plicae [where the synovial membrane gets folded in and pinched in the bones of the knee joint]. It's a case of the usual suspects with any injury...RICE [Rest Ice Compression Elevation]. Knock leg extensions on the head and go easy on the squatting until you are pain free. If you are not pain free in a week or two, or it gets worse you should see a quack - sorry - doctor!
