Do you ever do workouts which are slightly different/questionable, when it comes to CV endurance?
For example, ultra-marathons, or home-made workouts which defy logic/reason, but feel good to yourself? Or short 'beasting' workouts which would raise an eyebrow amongst 'sane' people?
One of my favorites (something I do maybe half a dozen times a year) is to walk from home at about 10:00pm, for 7 or 8 miles, to a particular place outdoors and spend the night under the stars. I then walk back in the morning. Not 'hard', but stimulating on a cold, frosty night. Also, quite an eerie place to try and sleep in:

Thought by some to be the mythical "Green Chapel" from the Medaeval book "Sir Gawain & The Green Knight":

Those about me in this hall are but beardless children.
If I were locked in my armor on a great horse,
No one here could match me with their feeble powers.
Therefore I ask of the court a Christmas game…".

Back and Better than before......
I am not big CV fan usually but me and my gf recently discovered that there is a pathway to a nearby hill. According to the map it is only 400 meters above sea level but the climb is quite steep since we live by the sea eh. Someone has build stairs in the last bit before getting up to the hill. Stairs are not so long, maybe 100 meters but quite steep. We have started to go up the hill as often as possible usually going up&down these stairs several times![]()

These sort of things are what i'm all about.
I do not enjoy regimented workouts or even dietary patterns so i freestyle all the time.
A couple of weeks ago i set off at about 7pm, ate about half a kilo of seabuckthorn berries off the bush, powerwalked 6 miles to the top of a hill, sat topless meditating in the dark for half an hour with excellent views over somerset then powerwalked 6 miles back.
Sometimes i'll run into the sea or do crazy workouts using anything around the house or garden.
I do a few things with mates, we often go survival camping, there were loads of thick tree stumps that i decided to challenge myself and build a massive wall next to the camp, about 300m away from where most of the stumps were, each weighed about 70-100kg.
I used to be really into long distance stuff, one day i decided to run 28 miles to my brothers house but was absolutley exhausted and got a lift home, also got memories when training for the marines of me and my buddy mark (who's now in navy) loading our school backpacks with bricks and speed marching (running!) home from school at least twice a week, usually about 12 miles.
I dislike long distance running or jogging now but i don't mind walking, i still do nice walks now and again.
I prefer sprints! rather than plodding along for several miles i find it fun to be able to run to the next town along in the beach in a matter of minutes, as fast as i can, legs working like a machine.
I like 'sprinting as fast as possible for as far as i can until my muscles physically won't carry me further'

Excellent post, RC. I think doing things like that make you dig deep into your body's reserves and heighten your senses/awareness, to the point where the endorphins are almost hallucinary.
I did a charity run a few years ago with a m8 from the Paras. We ran to the top of the three nearest hills (as defined by their own summit trig-points) in three separate counties: Staffordshire, Cheshire & Derbyshire. The weather was awful! I think the total ascent/descent was just shy of 5,000 feet, over about 30 miles.
As we ran to the finish point on 'footpaths' through waterlogged farmland, we were dizzy with exhaustion and had fits of uncontrollable laughter!
The other thing that inspires me about the landscape, is the local history/legends of different areas. Its like your Somerset/Wiltshire areas, with their Neolithic/Pagan heritage. Very inspiring, when you think of the ancients, who may have stood at the top of the same hill and watched the sunrise.

I love cheddar gorge and burrington coombe here in somerset (went to school in cheddar)
It's the ultimate paleo experience to actually sleep in a cave, eat wild berries etc and drink fresh water coming out of the ground in the morning.
With the thought of many of our ancestors using this as home before me it's quite humbling.
There's a massive amount of history around these areas with the caves, plenty of human and animal remains from upper paleolithic and after the last ice age.
It's the perfect spot for caving and climbing too!
When i was at school i used to run up the gorge (via the steep hill next to jacobs ladder) every other day practically.
