Hey guys/girlies...wellll what gorg weather we're having lately. I hope you all making the most of it and jumping on that bike and going for a ride or a run. Ive been going out on my bike alot and have started used MP gloves as your hands tend to get very sore after a while, so go grab a pair and get out there and work them legs

Come on guys, Carly comes on here as a serious poster offering some great advice, lets ease up on the sleazy remarks. We don't have many female posters as it is. Lets keep this a friendly forum where all people can post without derogative remarks such as these.

I go out on my bike all the time now, it allows you to 'escape' and explore/enjoy the outdoors whilst getting some decent exercise.

I like going out for rides on the country roads around here, it's good beasting yourself going up steep hills as well, nothing better than 1st gear steep hill pedalling so hard the front wheel is constantly lifting off the ground and the rear wheel struggling for traction.

And then the fun of going down hill and cooling off in the breeze......on a mile long, very steep hill (about 700ft up) i got up to 63mph!

I also like doing downhill/free ride as well, although it's only a matter of time before i kill myself doing this.

My opinion....get a cross country style mountain bike.

A racing bike you can only use on the road.
A cross country/MTB you can use both off the road and on the road.

Yes, the MTB is less efficient than the racing bike (by about 20% mabye?) but that's better than the racing bikes 0% efficiency at handling an off road track.

You could even have 2 sets of tyres/rims for the bike, one road, one off road and that would work brilliantly.

If i can nail it along and zip past 'road bikers' in their high vis lycra on a mountain bike with fat tyres i'm sure you can use it for reasonable road use.

good point i have been thinking about whether to do that, i've seen a nice 2nd hand one on ebay and i thought i could get dropped handles/ slick tyres for when i just want it on the road...

Another thing to consider for a dual purpose beast is lock-out suspension.
You can lock it completely to produce a solid frame for road use (so you don't lose power when pedalling) or use it for off road.

It really does depend what you intend to do with it tho.
If you want to go to the extreme of either then you will need a specific bike for this, a proper mountain bike or a proper racing bike....big money tho.

What RB recommends is what I do. I have some proper off road tyres if i know i'm going across feilds/dirt tracks and a slicker set for general road use. I just have front forks that are ajustable and can be locked for road use. They will still move though when a sudden big force is put through them ie a pot hole or curb but no where near as much as unlocked.
