resting heart rate chart, for calculating your heart rate

This website shows a convenient little table for men and women.

The average heart rate seems to be between about 70 - 76, so where do you place?

Im male, 20 and have a resting heart rate of 52 which places me in the athlete category.
    Height: 5'9" Weight: Currently 86KGs

I'm 45, was measured at the hospital a few months ago prior to an operation (ahem the big V) so expected an elevated RHR, the result was 53 and according to that site it makes me an athlete which is hard to believe.....

Just goes to show that all of that isn't what it's cracked up to be

Seriously though, maybe a combination of genetics and type of training*. I do believe that training can lower your heart rate (I've no idea by how much), but maybe genetics plays a bigger part. When I was eleven or so I had an operation and the doctor commented to my Dad about how I had a low heart rate, even suggested I might be okay at long distance which wasn't too far off the mark.

*Also, whilst I've done weights throughout my life to some (lesser) extent, the vast majority of my training up until about a year ago would have been running, biking and in the early days I did a fair bit of swimming.

I'm going montior mine occaisonally as I'm interested to see if my departure from running could be the reason my RHR has gone up. It could be my overall reduction in exercise or dietry changes perhaps. I'm looking to work some HIIT alongside weights, I'll be checking to see if it makes a difference.

indeed; A friend of a friend who was a kayaker had a HR of around 38, when he went into hostipal he had to explain that this was normal for him so they didn't invoke any emergency procedures.

There is summat about cyclists, a while ago I did some time trialling with the local club, and one of the fellas there was sub 40..
