Hi guys, unfortunately pulled my quad muscle the other week playing football. Took a week off from training and my gym work (which broke me!!) and went through the traditional R-I-C-E techniques to try and help it.

It doesn't hurt at all during the day, no pain as I'm writing this or when I walk or even run to an extent. However, every time I kick and put force through it it pulls again. As a keeper I kick the ball full force 20-30 times a game. I've had this problem before, tried to play through it and tore it completely.

Anybody got any advice on how to treat it? It's contact with the ball when kicking that pulls it further.

    Cheers guys, Al

Sorry for not replying, I don't normally cover injuries so I just ignore them when they come up. I noticed that you hadn't had any replies so I thought I would pitch in.

You need to keep the stress off it for a while, is it possible to leave the football out for a while? I would personally have regular showers, switching every 30 seconds between hot and cold water on the target area (quad).

    Hope this helps.

Was beginning to think I'd have a rare non-replied post!!

It would be frustrating as I get paid per game and I don't want another keeper to get a chance (selfish but it's cut-throat @ my club), but I've gotta think about the bigger picture I suppose...

If you risk your placement then you can try to stick with the football but use the contrast shower at the same time. Warm up your quads like a madmen before you do any football... If things get worse, you will have to consider resting.

When I used to play football with injuries, I used to use deepheat - I probably wouldn't use it now because I am obsessive over what I let my skin absorb. It may be worthwhile using it for a brief period if you find relief with it though.

Use very light quad work, like extensions, to force blood in to muscle **without stressing it**.
