On the 23rd of September 2010 James will be aiming to smash a 20 year old British deadlift 110kg junior record. Currently standing at 342.5kg, the MP Athlete hopes to pull a massive 345kg! We spoke to James about his preparation and nutrition leading up to the event...
"I'm eating pretty similar to how I normally do, slightly less carbs and more protein to help with recovery.
Training sessions are much lower volume but higher in intensity. I'm deadlifting at over 80-85% of my 1RM every couple of weeks. My build-up has been:
- week 1 250x3
- week 3 275x3
- week 5 300x2
- week 7 (not done yet) 320x2
In between these heavy workouts I have been doing 3 session waves of dynamic effort deadlifts, for example:
Week 1 250kg x 3 on Monday then the Thursday I did 185kg for 12 speed singles. On week 2 workout 1 was 195kg for 10 speed singles and workout 2 was 205kg for 8 singles. I followed this with 275kg x 3 to start week 3.
I will now be doing 3 speed sessions before my next heavy workout working up to 8 reps with 210kg and about 20kg of band tension. Then I'll move onto 320kg x 2 reps and after that a couple of light sessions. For the next 2-3 weeks I'll concentrate only on speed, working up to 210kg with about 30kg band tension for 8 singles."
With only a few weeks to go James is feeling confident as his preparation has set him up for an awesome shot at success:
"My preparation for this competition has gone much better than anything I have done in the past. I'm stronger and much more focused mentally than I have been before. I've made mistakes and overtrained in the past, but not this time. Something huge is on the cards!"
James's nutrition plan includes:
MP MAX® True Whey
Creatine Monohydrate
K-RALA
Mega Cissus
Electrolyte Powder
Di-Potassium Phosphate
Good luck James, from everyone here at MP HQ!
