  • Myprotein Official Statement-Euro launch

In the past year, we have seen a dramatic increase in popularity of Myprotein in other European countries. The Myprotein philosophy of offering high quality products, backed up with excellent customer service at low, direct prices quite clearly is universally very attractive.

We are really pleased to see more and more European customers trying Myprotein and enjoying the experience. We therefore took the decision to invest a lot of time and money in creating local platforms for our growing community of customers in France, Germany, Ireland, Italy and Spain. This is a complex process and we accept there are some issues we need to address. Our core commitment of offering premium supplements at low prices remains at the heart of this key step for our business.

From a legal viewpoint, we must also comply with EU law which states that a company must charge local VAT on products when a certain sales level is reached. We are now at this level. Finally, like any other international business, we must take into account exchange rate fluctuations and build in a level of tolerance to ensure pricing is both equitable and commercially viable.

We are committed to maintaining the Myprotein philosophy in each country we serve and we acknowledge that in this instance our pricing is incorrect and must be reviewed. We always listen to feedback from our customers and as a result we are looking again at pricing across all countries.

Two main reasons for the current issues are:

    1. VAT applicability in each country is complex. Some ingredients are VAT applicable and some are not. Some are VAT applicable when part of a blended product. Some are simply unclear. As a result, we are currently working with our VAT experts to confirm the categorisation of products in each country’s VAT structure. We absolutely have no wish to make money on the inclusion of VAT. This is purely a legal requirement that we must comply with.

    2. The exchange rate between Sterling and the Euro has been quite volatile over the last few months. When we set European pricing, the exchange rate was much higher than its current level. This has resulted in pricing being set higher than it should have been, based on the current exchange rate. As a business, we must build in a level of exchange rate fluctuation but we recognise that this is currently set too high. We are working right now to reformulate our pricing based on more realistic and up to date exchange rates.

We would like to apologise for any alarm and frustration that has been caused by our initial pricing. Myprotein place the utmost importance on getting our pricing right as soon as possible. This means pricing that is unbeatable in the market place, complies with local country regulations and is fair for our customers.

Please bear with us while we conduct this review and we can assure you that we are absolutely committed to resolving this issue as soon as possible and maintaining our core brand values.

That may be true and I sincerely commend MP for doing so, however I have been buying from MP for years and was alarmed to see a fixed € price quoted for the first product I put in my basket.

I have shopped online for items other than supplements and have seen this international price fixing many times and personally I think it’s disgraceful.

I have been to a rival website and they are charging the same sterling price for the same product but when converted over to €’s it is much lower than the MP price. How does that fit into the MP guarantee of the lowest prices?

Whatever the reasons for adopting this new system the consumer will only see one thing and that is an increase in price! This will force us to look elsewhere, as I did.

I don’t know how many people I have forwarded onto this site over the years but it has been a lot and now I feel cheated. When I open the site I see a sterling price and then when I log in I see an inflated euro price!

Granted the shipping has decreased but the margins are still beyond what your rival site is offering.

I don’t know what is going to happen in the future with MP but in this economic climate or any economic climate for that matter people will go to where the price is right!

I wish MP all the best in this new direction they are taking but for me, a dedicated Irish customer, I fear I may be forced to shop elsewhere...

      Regards
      Irish Customer

I agree with Worzel, as Italian customer, if the prices will be these fixed in Euro, converted over from £ to €’s, i think that i' ll go to shop online from another site.

      PS, i m a costumer since 2006.

      Bye.

This has ****ed us over pretty bad.
Previously, for a single 5kg bag of flavoured Impact Whey Protein I would have to pay £44.95 which is, give or take, €52.00, but now that MyProtein has decided to set fixed euro prices I would have to shell out €74.79 for the same exact product.
That's a €22,79 increase I am not willing to pay.
So yeah, you just lost another long-time customer (and all of his friends) with this move.

      Cheers

I received a 10% discount voucher today. However, it is still 28% more expensive even after I take the discount!!!!

I want to know if the following statement applies to customers in Euro land 'similar product elsewhere for less, then use our Online Price Matcher₁ and we’ll guarantee to beat it!' If so, then we should all start sending in some examples.

I am really fed up with this. I am running out of stuff and was about to make a big order and I am awaiting a reply about if/when the prices will be corrected.
I'm also feel I have been made to look a bit silly. I had been giving out MyProtein details like confetti and now the prices are duff.

can we get a MyProtein reply on this forum?

Do MP give the option of taking payment through Paypal?

That would sort out any problems regarding possible currency rate fluctuations. There'd obviously have to be a small price increase to cover the costs of using Paypal but probably a 1 or 2 pound surcharge would cover it which is definately more feasable than the 22 euro increase mentioned above!

Won't work. I called MyProtein and if you are sending your products to Euroland.....then it's the Euro prices.

They did say that they will be doing a price review (that was also stated in an announcements on the 8th October) but they have no idea when this will be ready. Weeks, months.......... I have almost run out of protein waiting, so I need to shop elsewhere. Voting with your feet also tends to help!

I actually think they need to reconsider their webdesigners - I think they are out of their depth on what this needs. They could have set this up to automatically update prices when key barriers are reached (Changes of more than 5% in exchange rates, completed at midnight every night). They needed an exchange rate cushion for sure....but they could have a small one and keep their existing customers happy.

Competitors sites also allow you to choose the currency - but they generally hit you harder for the delivery charges. I am looking at one who wants £16.99 for delivery, but the saving verses the Myprotein Euro rates is over £70!!! Instead I am increasing the order as the delivery charge remains the same even if I add another 10kg. See.....they sell me even more!!!

Perhaps they need a good currency broker (I can recommend a good one if they PM me - not advertising).

Guys we have answered everything we can on this now. As promised we are reviewing our FX and tax implications and responding once we have finalised. This is a very complicated process which can not be rushed, but please rest assured we are working on it.
