From the above article:
Quote
The researchers from the Veterans Affairs Medical Centre and Duke University Medical Centre say nearly half (47%) of those in the low-carbohydrate group were able to reduce or cut out their blood pressure medication, compared with around one fifth (21%) of those on orlistat plus a low-fat diet.
....
The lead author, Dr William Yancy, from Duke University Medical Centre, said: "The findings send an important message to people with high blood pressure who are trying to lose weight.
"While weight loss typically induces improvements in blood pressure, it may be that the low-carbohydrate diet has an additional effect."

I had my blood pressure taken this morning (doctor check up because of my chest aches - got ECG on Thursday too), I came out at 158/88 - lets hope that was just white coat syndrome on the systole reading!

It probably was WCS - you were obviously going to be somewhat apprehensive having had an ECG because of 'chest aches'. Mine has been higher than that in the doctor's (or nurse's) consulting room but if I take it myself at home it's normal.

'Normal' is - or was (they keep moving the goal-posts on these things!) - 120/80. Anything over 140/90 is/was considered hypertension. Usually, in white coat hypertension, the systolic tends to go way up but the diastolic tends to stay around 90. Blood pressure that is too far under 120/80 is hypotension and tends to have other health consequences. Some think that the diastolic reading is the more indicative of the two readings, along with the pulse pressure (the difference between the systolic and the diastolic).
