What Wotan said: The basic CardioChek (ST) certainly allows you to use glucose testing strips (they are more economical than the lipid test strips (more strips at a better price) but you have to buy the CardiChek glucose strips - you can't use any other brand as far as I am aware. The PA version may also do glucose (blood ketones too, I think).

I buy mine from here (it is the cheapest UK source I have found yet plus they do discounts for bulk purchases: TeNS Medical Services Ltd CardioChek ST Cholesterol Meter

Scroll down the page for the test strips: Glucose is £29.99 for 25 strips (more expensive than those for a dedicated glucose meter but as you say better than faffing about with different meters and different brands of test strips).

That's an excellent result. A rolling 16-hour one would be nice to compare with mine if you are still up for doing one.

I just received - in the post - some urine testing reagent strips I ordered on-line. They test for Leukocytes (a type of white blood cells often a marker for inflammatory conditions), Nitrites, Protein, pH, Blood, Specific Gravity, Ketones and Glucose.

I did a test a short while ago (haven't eaten or drank anything so far today) and my results were negative (or normal) for everything except ketones.

pH in particular has been a 'hot topic' among those who believe a mainly animal food based diet will result in metabolic acidosis and bone loss. But if this was the case one would expect the urine to be abnormally acidic. Normal urine pH levels are around 6.0, which is what my result was.

Specific Gravity, another marker of how well the kidneys are functioning, was 1.030 (normal range 1.020-1.030).

There was definitely no protein, blood, leukocytes, nitrites or glucose in my urine either.

Only ketones were elevated which, as a non-diabetic, is good news - it means I am oxidising fats instead of glucose!

Cheers. I am my own guinea pig, I suppose. I thought,as there was a lot of argument recently about whether my type of diet is acid-forming or not, it was worth checking if my personal experience confirmed or busted that 'myth'. I personally do not think it has anywhere near the impact the hippy crowd believe it does. As our blood is already on the alkaline side we have more leeway to go mildly acid than we do to go any more alkaline and alkalosis is every bit as unhealthy as acidosis! But you never hear the hippy-drippy lot caution about eating too much veg! Which is why most vegetarians (certainly vegans) usually cop it 20 years later.

A new study says there is NO link between the consumption of cured meats (like sausages and bacon) and increased risk of brain cancers!

I didn't even think there was meant to be a link between cured meats and brain cancer?

I thougt that was bowel cancer due to nitrosamine production from nitrates.
