    Hi,

I'm on the AD and often train at 6.00am.

I'd prefer not to have wake at 4:00am to have pre WO food so generally have a protein shake before training.

I had read that Whey can spike insulin which I'm not keen on doing; which of the following is best:

    1. Instant Milk Protein before training - how slow release is this? And presumably this will spike insulin less than normal Whey.

    2. Normal Whey taken with fats (20ml of double cream).

Will the fats in option2 reduce the insulin spike? and how much longer would it take to digest?

Any preference between options 1 and 2?

(note I'd wake at 5:15 so have the shake approx 30 minutes before training)

I'm cutting on the AD. I will be catabolic in the morning, could a third option be to take some OAKG and leave the protein out? I've done this on occasion and to be honest I havn't noticed that my workouts have suffered. I assume my muscle glycogen stores (even on a keto diet) are sufficient to get me through a 1 hr training session - will this be hindering growth or fat loss though?

    Thanks
    Nick

Nick, if you had for example, a decent amount of oily fish before going to bed, are you sure you'd be catabolic at 6:00am?

I don't know anything about the AD, so I'm just asking the question. I'd also be interested to hear some opinions on this.

Personally, i eat some slow release fat, protein, and a small amount of low Gi carb foods about 1 hour before training. A current snack i am find working well is a soft-boiled egg, a pear, and a tablespoon of CoconPure coconut butter. Occasionally i will have a mouthful of leafy greens like some organic spinach, watercress, and rocket mix, which gives me a nice vitamin and mineral boost.

however, i realise wholefoods that early might not go down well, so i would have a scoop of slow release protein like calcium caseinate or MPC, blended with some berries, and a tablespoon CoconPure. You could dump a serving of Superfoods XS in the shake as well.

I know DiPasquale's not a fan of coconut oil, so you could use cream isntead. Try and get non-homogenized cream

When you eat the foods your body is made for (Paleo foods) in a framework that your body is made for (feast-fast, such as IF), it all works beautifully.

If all macros are consistent throughout teh day, neither method will make a difference in the long run

    Many thanks for the replies.

I'll give the whey, double cream and Superfood a try and see how I get on. I assume based on the responses there's no clear benefit to muscle gain or fat loss either way so will have a play around.

In terms of having the energy to train at this time of the morning I think a good nights sleep contributes the most and some strong coffee before the session!
