    Nu - if you have a moment I would love to see some of the studies you mentioned in this post;

    As a continuation of my answer to ATZ's hit and run response - ketogenic diets have also been successfully used in clinical trials on cancer patients who have exhausted all the mainstream treatments without remission. They have also been successfully used in diabetics and the obese and overweight. Research with this type of diet has begun (or has been proposed) for a host of other disorders including autism, brain tumors, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, ALS (Lou Gehrig’s Disease), head trauma, migraines, narcolepsy, and depression.

    I only mentioned obesity, diabetes and cancer (aside from epilepsy). All the others were areas where research has just begun or is being proposed (in other words interest in the ketogenic approach to treat other ailments is beginning to grow due to the successes of the diet in other areas). If I find anything pertinent I will post.

    EDIT: Here are a few to be going on with (you only have use google scholar to get no end of references):

    Fred - Do you have a vested interest in this or are you just seeking general knowledge?

    Just seeking general knowledge. I am especially intrigued by the links with diet and certain medical conditions. I'm not a fan of ketogenic diets or even low carb diets as a norm personally, but the links with diet and certain illnesses are very interesting, should serve me well later in life. If I had to change my diet for an illness I would do it. As it is, I lovez da carbz.

    Is the only reason you are against low carb diets because you "lovez da carbz"?

    I actually find it very easy to strip out carbs but then i found it difficult to put on good mass!

    Absolutely. For me = Low carb for cutting, Need carbs for mass. I can cut the carbs for a while in a cutting phase, but I couldn't make the full change to low carb without a very good reason. Perhaps it is optimal for health as is always suggested, but I prefer to find a balance and I enjoy my food, which includes carbs...

    Every approach has it's place. The key is finding something that works for you as an individual and sticking with it.

    You might also be interested in following this snippet up: the three most potent antioxidants are the ones the body synthesises itself - superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase and glutathione oxidase. Dietary antioxidants, such as vitamin C, etcetera, come way down the list to these three in terms of potency/effectiveness. It has been shown that a low carb/ketogenic diet accentuates the synthesis of these.
