Are there any negatives to eating too much protein?

Im currently 160 pounds, but im consuming between 200-250g of protein a day with 100-150g of fat. This is obviously more than the ' 1 pound of protein per pound of body weight' ratio which is often used, however is this ok?

Im eating lots of nuts, meats, eggs and protein shakes - all of which obviously contain a lot of protein.

Im trying to bulk up at the moment, so I'm consuming well over my maintenance calories and im training well, but just concerned that im taking in too much protein and fat. (if thats possible)

The fat intake is completely fine, no issues with that. And with the protein intake, most people would agree it's fine from a health perspective. I'm not sure it's strictly necessary though, 200g tops for someone your weight, and even then I'd say that is unnecessary. Mainly due to the fact that at the end of the day all the protein you consume that doesn't contribute to muscle repair and creation, gets converted to glucose/ketones and eventually converted to body fat, so you may as well reduce protein to 180g and make up the difference in calories with carbs and fat thus saving your self some money.

All "extra" protein will get used by the body as carbohydrate (in basic terms). So like sendos says there's no real point unless you've got the money to do it and you like the taste or, conversely, don't overly like carbs.

I've tried eating a very high protein diet when cutting, I was having 300g-400g per day. It's an expensive way of eating and it makes your gym clothes smell of ammonia!

    Calling HTK!

There are theoretical risks of high protein intakes, long term; HTK is more of the man you are looking for in regards to research.

However, I have safely used 290-310g of protein each and every day for about a year - in terms of growth, there is no advantage of such an intake over the usual recommended dosing (1g of protein per pound of bodyweight), and it does work out expensive... it does, however, completely kill cravings and hunger pangs over long periods.

Super high protein intake hasnt always been associated with steroids. Alot of old school strength athletes and body builders used to have massive protein intake even before steroids were invented......they were brutally strong and very well built.
