Just thought I would share this with you as its always a subject that gets brought up with Women starting off in Fitness.

7 Reasons Why Women Should Do Resistance Training
    1) Lose Body Fat
As your lean muscle increases so does your resting metabolism, and you burn more calories all day long.

    2) Gain Strength Without Bulk
Researchers also found that unlike men, women typically don’t gain size from strength training, because compared to men, women have 10 to 30 times less of the hormones that cause muscle hypertrophy. You will develop muscle tone and definition.

    3) Improve Your Athletic Performance
Whatever sport you play, strength training has been shown to improve overall performance as well as decrease the risk of injury.

    4) Be Physically Stronger
Increasing your strength will make you far less dependent upon others for assistance in daily living. Chores will be easier, lifting kids, groceries and laundry will no longer push you to the max.

    5) Reduce Your Risk Of Injury, Back Pain & Arthritis
Strength training not only builds stronger muscles, but also builds stronger connective tissues and increases joint stability. This acts as reinforcement for the joints and helps prevent injury. When cardiovascular exercise is added, these benefits are maximized

    6) It Is Never Too Late To Benefit
Women in their 70′s and 80′s have built up significant strength through weight training and studies show that strength improvements are possible at any age.

    7) Improve Your Attitude And Fight Depression
A Harvard study found that 10 weeks of strength training reduced clinical depression symptoms more successfully than standard counselling did. Women who strength train commonly report feeling more confident and capable as a result of their program, all important factors in fighting depression

This has been said many times and I don't think it can be said enough really, I still try and convince those around me to get off the treadmills and really do something that'll change their figure as they so desire.

I'm sure regarding #1 there was a thread on here stating that 'calorie out' isn't as greatly affected by lean muscle gain as people think, it's rather minimal. Muscle tissue repairing on the otherhand will be different I'd imagine.

Couldn't agree more. Of course there are many more benefits too.

The hard part is changing the nation - something that won't happen the way the fitness industry market the product of health clubs and fitness.

The use of weight training is just simply too beneficial for everybody. Its positives are never ending and i dont know of any negatives. Some people argue weight training is "dangerous" when in actual fact its the safest sport on the planet.

Parents will let their children play a sport such as rugby where the compressive forces received on the spine and body are much much greater than those in weight training. Oh but a resistance program? Oh no that might cause harm!

I still find it amazing people think weight lifting is bad for you! Theres no telling some people. Yes because sitting on your bum all day eating donuts is a much better way to live isnt it?

Really gets on my nerves, I truly believe that they will never learn.

The injuries that I've had from weight training have all been due to tight muscles (I'm excluding popped blood vessels here), which were easily reversible and will probably never seriously effect me again - if anything, they'll just get tight again. The worst injuries that I've sustained from other sports, such as running, martial arts, rugby, bike trial siding etc. range from broken ribs, toes, a fractured ankle, sprained wrists, pulled muscles, concussions etc.

I completely agree with everything you have said! I enjoy weight training, so much more than treadmill etc *yawn*. Recently got a dog and she needs brisk walks serveral times a day, so that covers the cardio part and its much more fun. Also, my boyfriend and I have bought some boxing gloves and pads, excellent for working up a sweat! (He is twice the size of me, so I have to work even harder!)

I have found that weight training is the best thing for burning fat, still got a little excess to go but getting there. It also improves my mood

The sad thing is, I'm still the only female in the weights section. The gym I go to is really friendly and everyone helps each other out so there's no excuse really.

Just had a quick look at your website (have a proper look later) - inspirational!
