    Hiya,
Yesterday at Doctors appointment, I told the doc I was take protien supplement her responds was..WHY? She said that if you eating a good healthy diet with protein in it you shouldn't need to take supplements too!
So when I came home I researched the net about it. It seems its a gray area some say No you don't need it & others say Yes BUTonly really after a work-out!! Infact it seems to much protein isn't good for the liver & it can make you gain weight rather than loss it!! So why or how much should we use it???

hi Bayangel - basically protein supplements are just that, a supplement.

Your doctor was right to state that you should be able to get all the protein you need from your diet.

Bodybuilders (and athletes generally) have higher protein requirements than the sedentary, and it's just convenient to take it in powdered form sometimes (particularly post workout). The other benefit of whey protein post workout is that its very quickly digested - that is arguably the one time when you want a sudden rush of amino acids in your bloodstream.

Whether you 'should' or 'need' to take protein supplements depends entirely on your goals - what are they and what does your diet look like?

Bacon and sausage is red meat not that there's anything wrong with eating red meat whatsoever.

If your goal is to lose a bit of weight then just keep things simple - eat around 250-500kCal below your maintenance level each day, plan a diet accordingly and stick to it

Protein supplements are good idea if you arent getting enough protein and dont have any time in your day to eat any more solid protein foods in your diet - its a simple as that. Theres nothing magical about them - they are just a quck and easy way to top up your protein intake if you arent getting enough from your normal diet. Proper food is always preferrable as food contains lots of vitamins, minerals, enzymes, and other beneficial compounds. Many folks use protein powder after training just because it is an easy way to get some protein down you (for recovery) on the way out of the gym.

If u can take all the protein u need (1gr/ lb if u lift) through your diet there is no need to take PP. However, most of the time i find it extremly difficult to cover my protein needs, as i'm not a meat fun.

I always choose unsweatened PP coz i think is healthier. I'm not a fun of these chemicals (sweateners).

All in all, PP is a good option for post lifting

What is a "good healthy diet" these days? Overcultivation and mass food production has taken its toll on nutritional value.
