There's a chance that test will be refused since the fasting blood glucose was normal, and diabetes hasn't been diagnosed.

If you ask for a list of tests GPs can get funny, you have to bare in mind that they have a budget, and they can't give any patient any test they'd like without good justification.

I'd stick to the GTT. It'd be nice if your GP agreed to this. He'll probably ask why you want the test, so be ready to explain that you feel you have a blood sugar problem and that your father has type 2 diabetes.

There are other tests that can give interesting results, such as a fasting glucose/insulin/c-peptide combo, but the insulin test is relatively expensive so I wouldn't fancy your chances of having it done on request, unless it can be justified.

Hi, been lurking (and using MP Products) for sometime. This is my first post.

This thread has been very helpful for me also in working out what and were my problem with carbs lies. Many thanks to Victoria and NU_Nutrition for their excellent help and advice.

I don't want to hikack the OP's thread and I may start my own, rather than bore you all with the details here. Anyway I am going to do my own GTT as described by Victoria and I thought the following info may be useful to the OP or anyone else considering doing a GTT themselves as the amount of Lucozade used has changed due to changes in the glucose content.

    Quote Quote
ORAL GLUCOSE TOLERANCE TEST (OGTT)- NEW LOWER GLUCOSE LUCOZADE! ARE YOU USING THE RIGHT VOLUME?
GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) are lowering the glucose content of their Lucozade Original.
‘’GSK are reducing the glucose level in Lucozade Energy Original – the new formulation will be available from early May.”
The new formulation of Lucozade Energy Original - will need to increase volume from 394 ml to 410 ml to deliver 75 g glucose.
There will be a transition period when both the 73 kcal/100ml and the new 70 kcal/100ml variants will be available.
The back of the packaging will confirm which formulation is in the bottle or can.
    73 kcal/100ml - 75 g glucose = 394 ml
    70 kcal/100ml - 75 g glucose = 410 ml
Hope it's useful, thanks again, Paul.

Hi Paul. Welcome. And thank you for that contribution re Lucozade - I didn't know there was quite that much sugar in it!

Yep, all the details are on their website.

I wouldn't recommend using Lucozade 'orange' either. For some reason the reaction to it is slightly off. Original gives the best results
