I would have gone 14-15% as well.

Ok, thanks for all the responses. 15% seems a fair average.

I've only recently started doing squats - I'd spent the first couple of months at a gym with no barbells, I've now moved to better gym so I've added rows, deads, pulls ups, squats etc to my routine. The squats are on the smith machine, but I train alone, so that's the best I'm gonna get for now I reckon. Saying that, they're still a huge improvement on the dumbbell variant that I did previously!

I would agree with the average response, however, give me 50p and I would say 10%!!

Would try to avoid doing squats on the smith machine, but if it as good as it gets then have a look for an even better gym with a power rack.

If the problem isn't the gym's lack of a power rack but your own lack of a spotter I'd say you're worried over nothing. I squat alone, and I've never used a spotter. I can see the need for them, don't get me wrong, but if you're careful I see no reason why they're a necessity.

Also, you have a thread in the FAO section

Hi HBK, there's no power rack there so it would be difficult to get the bar up.

Smith squats are a huge improvement over what I was doing before though. My membership is up in a couple of months, so I'm gonna have a look around Sheffield for some alternatives.

    Cheers

Hi everyone, I just thought I'd post some pics 3 months on from my first ones. During this time, I've put on 2.5kg and a bit of muscle, unfortunately, I've put some fat on too, but I suppose the two go hand in hand to some extent. In terms of training, I've joined a proper gym in the past couple of weeks and I'm really settling into it and enjoying it loads; I can squat, row, deadlift regularly now when I couldn't before at the old gym. At the time of the last pics, my son was a couple of weeks old, so training took a back seat for a little while, but things have eased now and I can get to the gym more frequently and consistently! Thanks for looking and any comments welcome
