Hello if you are installing or installed also trying to get Windows XP service pack 3. Which works with home and professional edditions. You find msn wont work you will need to take it of then put it back on then it will work fine.

Alot of windows updates are not working with sp3 updates. Cause sp3 sometimes wont download automatic on automatic updates. So you might have to manually download it. I know its bigger one but it works fine just larger file then the automatic update one but if it dont work just get it from here http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

Just to let people know what I sorted out last night.

i don't bother updating my windows anymore, haven't for the last 2 years.

switching to linux in a few weeks as windows is playing up a lot lately, and every1-2 years or so i have to reformat and reinstall it all cos it accumulates so much random useless windows stuff.

Yeah, you're only alternative is to phone MS and say you called a PC engineer out of the paper and now your computer won't update.

Obviously sound shocked and bemused when he advises that you only have XP home and the dodgy engineer has installed pro.

Sometimes they will give you a genuine code, otherwise you need an xphome CD, if you phone up the PC manufacturer they may sell you a replacement disk at a low price.

I also updated my XP Home edition OS with SP3 (after reading this thread). Went like a dream. Can't remember if it happened just prior to or after updating to SP3 but my copy of MS Excel stopped working. It kept asking me to insert the original software set-up CD-ROM (which I have) but my DVD-RW drive has stopped functioning too! Then, today, out of the blue I click on a link that happens to be for an XLS spreadsheet and Excel boots up no problem! I haven't the heart to try the DVD-RW drive again in case it is still kaput!

I think Windows is pretty naff overall. I'd love to have an alternative OS just can't afford it at the moment!
