Oh dear! I can see a great many (non-diabetic) body-builders going for this!

Have to commend the scientist involved for thinking outside the box and coming up with an original solution, and perhaps his work will have other applications for acting as a transport for other things.

It's just frustrating that the only media coverage diabetes seems to get is about lessening the symptons, which sends out the message that it is neither preventable nor curable, and in both cases, I think that is false. There are certainly things you can do to lessen your risk of developing diabetes, and even if you do develop it, I believe that there are lifestyle changes you can make to reverse diabetes.

At the risk of sounding like a conspiracy theorist, I suspect most large pharmaceutical companies don't actually want to "cure" any diseases. They wouldn't be able to keep selling things like this chewing gum if they did.

(What do the two quotes above have in common? )

If big pharma could cure diabetes, they would, but they'd charge you, or rather the health service, a hefty premium for the drug. I think it would be more accurate to say that big pharma isn't interested in preventing disease, and from a business perspective, rightly so - they are in the business of making drugs, lifestyle choices is the domain of lifestyle gurus, channel 4 makeover programmes, Tesco and MPs.

Joking aside, to my mind, GPs are the pivotal people in the whole chain, but you can only advise with the knowledge you have, and I'm not saying this is true of everyone, but for many it is very easy to 'coast' along once you reach a certain level of pay/status in your life, in which case, they won't be interested in looking at new approaches or ideas around health, diet and nutrition.

Normal chewing gum does a good job of increasing insulin, providing you have a working pancreas!
