  1. Default Bloated? Why are people in the weights areas now looking so terrible?

Just something which has been playing on my mind of late. I've been to 3 different gyms in the past year and yet all 3 have the same 'bloated' look in the weights area. Why is this? Are people still believing that you must eat eat eat and watch the scales go up to achieve success? Jeezus. Have a look in the mirror, it's not muscle you're putting on, it's fat. I hear these so called 'experts' in the gym telling the young new guys to lift heavy and eat. Errrrr, nope. Any monkey can throw a big weight about a gym but doing so with correct technique is something totally different. I can't help but study people's form and condition (me bad I know) and 90% of it is ridic.

Maybe is easy to claim to be a power lifter these days so condition doesn't matter as much? (no offence to any 'real' power lifters out there)…I'm mean you're bulking huh… tongue in cheek.

What happened to proper conditioning? Where you could see every muscle rather than these arms where it's just kinda like a log and the wee belly to go? You know the one's I mean.

I went down the road of eat eat eat once (all pretty good food at the time I thought) and no CV. Then caught myself in a picture one day and it hit me how stupid I looked. My body fat had went from a respectful 11% to 20ish. Now I'm back down to a steady 8/9% and feel so much better for it. We're not all pro's so CV is not the enemy.

Just something I had to share. Maybe it's just the gyms I've been to. Who knows.

Everyone trains for different goals. Not everyone wants abs.

I wouldnt worry so much about what other people are doing in the weight room. Just make sure that newbies get the correct advice from you if they ask for it.

    Agree strongly.

Golden age bodybuilding produced better (not bigger) physiques.

Simple diet, simple training...pretty casual overall but with good sustained effort.

Too much fructose makes people bloated today as well, a guy comes in work and is pretty build but has a bloated gut on him, look at what he's buying and it's pizza, sweets and energy drink with a few tins of mackerel....
If you follow a realistic and simple diet, with some added calories to fuel your training you prob need up to 3000 a day.

    i agree also

its when the people with flabby arms claim to have 17/18/19 inch biceps

whereas some peoples arms are 2-3 inch smaller but they are visibly seperated and look rock which inturn makes them look bigger than they are

Yeah agree totally. They might be in the gym 3,4,5 days a week but when they step outside they look like they've never stepped foot in a gym in their life.

Be healthy and sensible and to new kids, please don't go ruining you're perfectly good (maybe small) frame to start with!

    Sidenote:
I saw a 10 or 11 stone(max) guy they other day, whack two 20kg plates on to the dips belt and do 3x8 perfectly and thought to myself, 'that's the difference'.
Yet the guys 'loading' the bench press for 2 can't seem to dip their own body weight for 15/20 even with foor form. WTF!!

Sure, anyone can claim to be anything - but your not a powerlifter if you cant squat, bench and deadlift heavy!

I'll take no offence as you probably don't know much about powerlifting and the people that compete today - alot have very impresisve physiques, but maybe not so in the SHW's lol

I think the problem you are referring to is that of the whole population being lazy and overweight - not just people in the weights room. It's much more widespread

P.S. I have a pet hate for treadmill junkies - they need to learn how to lift weights and eat some food!

Defo not aiming to offend power lifters and probs don't know as much about it as some.. was just meaning people wanting to be them when clearly they are not.

Also, yes, treadmills. Unless on the highest gradiant, no use. Women who want to 'tone', well I say hit the squat rack, dead lift, romanian DL, dip etc.. I train with the missus - she gets some funny looks when putting 7.5kg on the belt and starts doing chins (full hang's)

I think Scott is either a 140 or a SHW in this pic. Looks pretty good to me

    How old are you OP?

How long have you been training?
Always listen to experts. They'll tell you what can't be done and why. Then go do it.
