Central heating pump started rattling a bit yesterday, today a bit more - just a while ago this evening, the over pressure valve thing at the top went and the pilot light went out by the looks of it.

For now I turned it off and let it cool down, I presume there is some kind of air lock or the pump has failed - although the pump was replaced in Feb or Mar this year.

I don't know what the red tank is, which has a knob on the top which if you turn sounds like water goes somewhere, and also there is a black knob just below the mop which also makes water go somewhere too.

Does any one know what either of these do? Or something easy to try to get it going again?

We have British Gas home care who I'll call and arrange an appointment tomorrow to come and take a look unless its bleeding obvious.

Call a plumber mate, don't want to sound funny but asking for advice on a internet forum is asking for trouble.

I know exactly what the red thing is but i'm not gonna say because i'm not a qualified plumber and i wouldn't want you to potentially overpressure your system by turning it off, just leave it.

Well - I can rip a car apart and put it back together without using a haynes book - and I design photocopiers for a living, but heating is a bit alien to me, I can do taps, showers and bogs without any bother.

Didn't know if it was something obvious - if the rad's had been gurgling I would have gone with air lock and bled them but they aint.

But hot water systems in the home are something left to professionals I reckon. Worst case scenario? You make the problem worse (hence more expensive), you get burnt (hence more painful) and you get water p***ing everywhere (more expensive). Do you have home insurance? If so does your policy cover heating and plumbing?

Call plumber and get isurance if you don't already have it

I got British Gas home care so its covered.

Actually the instructions I just found on top of the hot water tank and it tells you how to fix it if the pressure gauge goes to zero on top of the red thing - so I've done that and it seems to be working.

But I'll get the gas man round anyway as its due an annual service which is included in the home care price.
