Hmm to believe that they must be seriously mentally lacking.
People who know darn all about exercise or training or diet (granted I don't know much, but I am learning)
When I mention on my fb status that I have been training
comment on "oh exercise makes you fat" ... well no how does it.. They send me a blog on research for a study that showed that people who exercised but didn't watch what they eat still gained weight. Well yes of course they are still going to gain weight if they are not burning off more than they eat.
Then people comment ohhh that is why I won't exercise. Get off your bum you lazy sod and stop trying to be smart just because you read something that is common sense
Sorry got a bit of rage there

I've learnt over the years that unfortunately it's better to keep as quiet as possible about any exercise you do because generally people will discourage you. Worse, some quote poor research like you encountered or make false claims, possibly as an excuse for their own lack of enthusiasm and some even tell you that exercise is ultimately pointless.
I say that you should tell only those you trust what you've been doing. No, you shouldn't have to, but it's a lot less stressful when people don't know.
Also, put your feet up and relax, this rage'll do you no favours.
Like those poor sods that WHENEVER you do any squat variation immediately say withing the first millisecond:
"Thats bad for your knees, you shouldnt do it."
Yeh well you know whats bad for my knees? Kneeing you in the cornea.

I did get a little bit over angry for my liking
But I can't stand people who read one article, and think that is it.
Of course this person has never been in a gym in their life and is tucking into a big fat dinner.
I actually upset a friend at a party last week. Going on about her Lighter Life diet she did, and how she found out she can't eat pasta because it makes her fat. Bread and pizza and such are fine, of course, but pasta is a "trigger food". Apparently her friend can't eat fruit, as that is her "trigger food" that makes her fat.
You can't help people sometimes.

I get this all the time. I once had a conversation with someone who was telling me that Usain Bolt just broke Michael Johnsons 100m record. That was an awkward conversation.
People are also surprised that training for 100m doesnt require you to go on 5 mile runs.
