A lot of people, especially women, have psychological reasons for why they overeat - it's not just about being lazy. I suffer with binge eating and have done since my late teens early twenties. I don't know why I do it and I'm working really hard to stop doing it.

I watch The Biggest Loser (for entertainment and hot Jillan Michaels action - not diet/fitness advice) and when you hear about what some people have been through, you can begin to understand why people turn to food for comfort.

However, it is for those reasons that I actually don't agree with gastric banding, prescription diet pills, etc - the reasons for turning to food in the first place are not addressed so IMO, counselling should be the first option before anything else.
Sorry, I feel I have started a huge fire here and if my first post appeared ignorant, well it wasnt intended.

You are doing something about it, even if you are not getting the results as yet. I totally agree it is something people turn to, as is smoking and alcohol - but I do not feel these people should then get all the free advice and medical attention just because they wont go and seek help themselves. I've seen many people who go for counselling but then just slip back into old habits. However, I see many people turn themselves around with hard work and life change.

The main topic was about free ops for those overweight - for me, they should be (like on the biggest loser lol) pushed into making an effort to do it for themselves - even with counselling involved.

There are those who have the bands fitted and still end up gaining again!!

The whole fat thing cannot be included in a 'zero tolerance' policy, simply because enough is not widely known by the public to make the correct decisions. Alcohol and smoking, the information is there.
And there isnt traffic light markings on food etc?

I think there is more than enough information if you seek to find it......... you cannot tell me there is anyone who thinks a dominos pizza or all you can eat chinese is good for you?

I wouldnt just attribute it to the overweight, but we do live in a very lazy country where people take the eaiser option rather than that which requires hard work. Not everyone, but more and more people.

To think people would have to walk before cars - yet people now drive their car 3 minutes up the road. When do you see a fat animal in the wild? Very rare!

Imo unless theres a medical reason as to why someone is overweight there is no excuse for that person to be fat. Lets cast aside the eating disorders and other disabilities into their own category as they dont fit the norm due to their circumstances. You are still left with a huge number of fat people who have chosen to mistreat their bodies. This isnt just a present problem but a future problem. Kids will be grown up into this type of environment and will most likely get overweight themselves on the family diet.

I was asked to help some friends of a friend to lose weight (They were pretty overweight) I sat them down and told them that diet was the single key to their weight loss. They didnt want to accept this and thought it was all down to cardio. I ditched them and never carried on as they simply refused to alter their diet. Since then they have gained 2-3 stone more. Why should i help people who choose not to accept help?

Im a swimming instructor as a part time job and i get parents asking me about fitness in general every now and again. This has been mentioned a LOT:

"I dont have time to stay fit, so i cant get rid of the excess pounds."

Dont get me wrong i understand people have hectic jobs and families to take care of, and might not get to go the gym. However this doesnt apply to your diet. Everyone has the time to eat healthier and it bugs me when people seem to think preparing a healthy meal takes 3-4 hours and so they opt for a burger king instead.

Then there are the people who are happy being overweight. Im not even going to get into that!

If i didnt go to the gym so much or eat as healthy as i do; i might have more patience with overweight people (who choose not to do anything about it) but a gym session takes less than an hour!! Ditch the crisps, chocolate and eat more nutrient dense food. Its so simple!

Dont tell me that im wrong for not feeling sorry for people who are overweight by their own choosing and then moan about being overweight.

Some disabled individuals dream about having a body that is fully functional. I think everyone should realise they are in control of an amazing machine and need to treat it right.

James' comment was extreme but i can see where he is coming from.

Although the best kind of rewards for eating well and exercising are intrinsic, initally alot of people need an extrinsic reward to get started. I think government incentives - and i mean real incentives that get peoples attention - woudl be a great idea. for example, discount food and exercise facility vouchers, National Health Insurance discounts, etc.

Im along the same mindset as James, if people become overweight through pure lazyness then thats their own fault, and if anything should be incentive enough to start doing something about it. If its for other medical reasons then obviously its different, however if someone has become diabetic etc through being overweight for so long when they were once not at risk, then they shouldnt be treated for it either.
