Shot in the dark really as I have been trying everything.

My brother is 17 and passed his test 2 weeks ago. Brought a smart Seat car but the insurance is £3000 and above a year for a 1.4ltr.

I dont suppose any of you have helped kids out or know of any decent places to look.

I have looked at all the usual sites like comparethemarket, moneysupermarket, admiral, churchhill, quinndirect etc etc....

    Cheers Adam

Tesco were the best for me. They have some dodgy no claims bonus stuff though. Ive been with them for 2 years (since i passed my test) and i assumed I would have had a 2 years no claims bonus. Well it turns out I only have one year no claims and one year "named driver" discount. Which counts for absolutely nothing!!!

Also i signed up to a fully comp contract however they knocked me down to third party fire and theft and I was still forced to pay the same amount. I never got anywhere with protesting against them. Apparently there was something wrong with the information I gave. I looked over it and all the stuff I gave them was true.

When i first went with them i was quoted £2100 which was by far the cheapest (On a 1.2L corsa W reg) and now im paying £980. I was quoted £7200 from admiral!!

I went with tesco as they are the cheapest however im leaving them as soon as a better offer comes through. Dont like the way they handle their customers.

As you have a 1.4L it could be tricky. Knock the contract down to third party fire and theft and put your excess at the highest amount its allowed. Engine size is one of the biggest deciders for student loan amounts. Theres huge jumps up between each engine size.

You might have to suck it up though. The first year is always a horrific amount but you will find with a clean year of driving it will more than halve for the next year.

*Edit* A few of my friends did the pass plus test to go along with their driving test. They got some good discounts for doing so. Could be an option.

Don't mean to dim the lights but my mum said to me earlier that the car insurance quotes might be going up 30% due to the fact so many younger men drivers can't afford insurance.

Can't confirm any of it though.

Depending on how much he paid for it, it might well be cheaper to sell it on and get a smaller engined car. Insurance is extortion these days, but it might be worth getting a reg of somthing smaller off of ebay and doing the comparison sites to get an idea of the difference in price.

i passed 15 months ago when i was 18 and got insurance for £2600 full comp for first year a lot of money then went to 3rd party fire n theft this year, are you starting full time work or are you a student? if your a student i suggest you get a car and put yourself as the second driver, sort of illegal but they cant prove it really, if your working full time might as well get your self first driver and get a years no claims, if you don't crash that is.
