Tis ruddy typical, 5 years of playing football with no major injuries and I go and do my ankle ligaments in*

My weight training had been going so well since December with me making a steady increase in lifts and leg presses and adding about 11lbs to my total weight.

I'm giving myself the night off tonight as I can't put enough weight on my leg to even spot my brother so a fat lot of use I'll be

Hopefully by Saturday I'll be ok to spot and train my chest/arms at least.

I suppose on the bright side with me not being able to do cardio for 8 weeks I should be able to pack some weight on

    * to make it worse, the game had finished and I was running to catch the train - doh!

I tore the ligaments in my left ancle last year and was on crutches for quite a while. That's a bummer.

Thanks guys, I might have a look into that

Its the second time I've done this ankle and when it happened there was a bit of a cracking noise. Thankfully its not my right as that went really badly when I was 17 and took 19 months to heal

I'll have a read about cissus

Exactly the same here, 2x games a week since August and lifting since November, I guess something was going to give. I'm not the biggest and have quite a skinny frame anyway although I've filled out a bit since November.

I used to be known as the Darren Anderton of our team after my last ligament bout but that was 5 years ago and I've had a clean bill of health since then. As you say there are definitely worse things out there, neck and back injuries for sure.... I'll be back to it in no time!

Sorry to start this thread again but instead of starting a new one I thought I would carry this one on.

I think I tore my ankle ligaments last Saturday, the 22nd sept. I stretched for a cross and as I planted my left foot it buckled under weight and. I heard something go, like a ripping sound. I have had it xrayed and there is no bone damage but the swelling was huge. I was on crutches until wednesday as I couldnt put any weight on it til then. The swelling has gone down a lot but still quite big and the bruising it still there. My ankle is all sorts of colours and I can not walk properly.

My question is how bad is it damged. I have sone it before in the other leg, but no where near as bad as I was running after 2 weeks. Also how long can I expect to be out for i.e. no running and then how long before I can expect to play football again.

    Thanks

I've had 3 of the little blighters now, the first one took the longest for the pain to completley go because I kept rushing it back, in the end it was 18 months until I couldn't feel it anymore.

The second time was a far worse roll of the ankle, as you did, it was playing football. This time I was very careful (Didn't want 18months out again), it was June and the physio said she wanted to plaster it and even then it'd be probably Easter before I could play again.... ouch.

I took my time with it, the physio gave me 3/4 courses of ultrasonic treatment (this was a godsent) I had 6 weeks off from exercise and then I started swimming then and using the cycling machines down the gym, by October I was the fittest player in our team

Last time out was only a baby, probably about 4 weeks of not playing footy and then another 2 of jumping tackles but its fine now.

To exercise your ankle (once the swelling has gone), keep your feet flat and stand up as high as you can on your tiptoes, do this 3 or 4 times to start with, it'll hurt a little but it stretches the ligament out

There is no rule on the time it can take to heal then. Depends on the injury and the person and the rehab goes. I am not sure when I should start exercising and how much to do. I still have swelling around the ankle and bruising around the the heal. I had a week of work resting. Back at work this week. Work in an office which is good for the ankle, however I commute into London and have a 10/15 minute work from station to work and by the end of the day my ankle really aches. The swelling also gets worse. Is this too much exercise for now? I spend the nights alternating ice packs and hot water bottles on my ankle which should help.

You can probably guess that I dont fancy 18 months so it is vital I recover corrrectly.
