At one point last year I was getting into my training and taking the protein shakes. While drinking them, I passed wind an awful lot and the smell was so bad I could hardly stand my own brew!

Well over the past few weeks, they have started again. Im not taking anything different aprt from a extra shake each day.

Is there anything you guys can suggest I do, eat or drink to help stop the smell! Its bad as sometimes I can help myself and let one go, and it isnt great when ASDA is busy when im working!

Protein powders pass the digestive system quickly, more so than natural protein sources which are usually combined with fat etc.
Protein powders go even quicker when combined with high gi carbs, fruit etc.

When protein passes too quickly through the digestive system it cannot break down fully and enters the colon where is putrefies generating lots of very smelly gas.

I no longer consume protein powders, i get all mine from whole sources, i actually rarely fart/have wind now on a paleo diet.

A good pro-biotic could go a long way to easing your situation. Also hydrochloric acid supplementation.

Here's an extract from an article written by Charles Poliquin.

"Hydrochloric acid helps us digest our food. Our bodies are protected from this corrosive acid by a mucosal barrier in our GI tracts. Many times when people think they have too much acid, they actually have too little barrier and not enough acid. Yes, this acid is a good thing.

Acid is one of the main things that help us to break down those big forkfuls of food into useable nutrients. Despite the popularity of acid-neutralizing and acid-blocking drugs, stomach acid is crucial not only to health, but also to achieving optimal function. When you block acid, you limit nutrient absorption and create an environment that is actually favorable to disease. Even if you don’t use these drugs, studies dating back over 70 years show that our ability to secrete acid decreases as we age.2-4

Having appropriate acid levels is step one. Before you start analyzing your percentage of fat, carbohydrates and protein intake, make sure your acid level is good. Before you start buying expensive supplements, make sure your acid level is good. Before you start analyzing your sets, reps, tempo and frequency, make sure your acid level is good. If you can’t break down your muscle-building nutrients, you’re putting in a lot of money and hard work and not getting the most from them. Again, it is step one."

This would make sense. Before my farts were pure evil, even the dog would run and hide as the wallpaper peeled off the walls!

Now I'm eating high fat, even with a protein shake I still always add lots of fats, I no longer have this problem. They must be slowly absorption of the proteins down.

Digestive enzymes may help a bit. And don't squat or deadlift if you're on a bad day

5% off on your first order? MP10238 code: Just use it!

I've been trying out a paleo diet(low carb)for two weeks now...the only carb i was having was maltodexrin or waxy maize with whey PWO(gotta use up my supps some how).Since not having the carbs in the shake the wiff from my rear has gone.....my kids no longer call me farty pants, although they insist on checking! Also I noticed if I eat something with the whey(say a few nuts or a bit of chicken) it's better!I think that way your stomach can digest the whey more easily. It will probably be even better when I run out of whey and just eat something instead!
