    My goal: increase overall body strength.

    Currently, my idea is to do something like this for a routine:

    Day 1: Bench press, bent-over row
    Day 2: Rest
    Day 3: Deadlift
    Day 4: Overhead press
    Day 5: Squat

    The problem is, I'm relatively new to doing the bent-over row, and so the last time I did it, my back was hurting for about three days after, so I had to inject in a couple of extra days' rest before I felt I could deadlift again. I'm hoping this won't be the case next time as my back will have got used to the exercise

    Does the above seem like a sensible programme to work to given my goal?

    In terms of sets and reps, I quite like the 6,1 principle (Poliquin on t-nation has an article about this), where you do your 1RM first, and this helps you lift more weight in the 6RM set, because of nervous system activation. I seemed to make more progress this way in my bench press the last month or so when compared to trying to add reps to a weight that was around my 4RM.
    Would this way of training be sensible for the row, overhead press, squat and deadlift? Or are there better sets and reps formats that I should follow?

    Current stats (all kg) @ circa 77 bw:
    Bench press single of 95
    Row 6 reps of 60
    Overhead press (straight legged) 3 reps of 60
    Squat 10 reps of 110
    Deadlift single of 160

    If your looking for strength I'd look at the Bill starr 5x5 or rippletoe.

    They are straight forward and give excellent strength gains

    workout 1:

    cleand and press
    weighted dips
    wide grip pull ups


    workout 2:
    squats
    SLDL/deadlifts
    ham curls
    calve raises.
