You have had at least 3 opinions in that thread, even if you totally ignore mine (which you are welcome to do).

If you are seriously equating a life-or-death medical condition to what shakes to use around training, I think that tells you that you are taking it too seriously.

    jason son, chill out.

You do not need a pre workout shake.

After workout take protein, maybe some carbs even though you would get these from your next meal about an hour later.

    Drink plenty of water.

You do not need as a beginner to go into so much depth for a pre and post workout shake. Whey protein will do, any of it, opt for total whey or something flavoured.

Finish training, throw 300ml of water and 1 scoop (30g) of whey into your shaker and neck the lot. Done with.

Go home, relax, have your meal, go to bed.

Diet is going to be more important than any supplements you take.

But seriously, for starters all you need is whey, omega 3's, l-glutamine (first thing when you wake 1 hour before food (thanks Wotan), and maybe creatine.

Thats what I started with, its all you need. Carbs come from your meals. If you need energy pre workout, buy some caffeine tabs and drink with water an hour before you hit the gym.

Protein shakes are NOT magic, you don't even really need them. I'm glad I took the time to give you some advice in the other thread, obviously in one ear, out the other.

Wotan, based on your input into this thread I'm surprised that you ever find time for sleep.

Great thread, I'll start on the 5 grams regime in the morning followed by 30 mins on the exercise bike.

Must dig out my copy of "The Ultimate Nutrient Glutamine" by Judy Shabert for a re-read.

Re the taste I'm with those saying it has no real taste, I can eat it directly from the spoon, I couldn't do that with BCAA or EAA though.

Took me a couple of hours to read all 33 pages but well worth it.

Apologies if this has been mentioned (It's a long thread) but i've been reading on Dr Mercola's website that Glutaime could be harmful due to its conversion to glutamate a potential (being the operative word) excitotoxin. What are your veiws on this Wotan?

Of course glutamine is a neurally excitory. That's why the brain uses it for fuel. If the brain were not supplied with excitory substances it wouldn't work. Glucose is also excitory, as is the metabolic breakdown of lactose (galactose) and diverse other things like alcohol.

Over-excitement leads to neural death. Yes of course it does. Over-exertion of the heart also leads to its to its death.

Toxicity is always a question of dose.

Two things you need to know that perhaps Mercola failed to mention.

    1. Glutamine is the most abundant amino acid in human blood. Glutamine is one of the few amino acids that cross the blood brain barrier. This alone should tell you something about its "toxicity".
    2. Vitamin C is known to protect the brain tissue from excito-toxins.

You will, of course, be taking lots of vitamin C with your glutamine - won't you.
