The pea protein is quite popular amongst the vegans on this board. I have tried the soy and hemp proteins, and they are both fine (allthough the hemp is a bit gritty and difficult to mix). Not tried the rice yet
Hi - I'd be interested to hear from other vegans or those who use non-dairy proteins as to which they recommend - pea, rice, soy? And why.
Have been reading some of the threads on here after ordering some soy protein, and wondered if I should mix it with rice, maybe?
Cheers.
Derek

Cheers Httk. And Hi Martin - looks like a good board worth visiting often!
I was more interested in the protein value of the vegan powders as I have heard that some, soy for instance, is very low in some AAs and may need topping up with something else to provide the right balance.
I do eat a balanced and varied healthy diet, but since going strictly vegan have lost some muscle size, hence the need for some protein supplement. Obviously I want to spend my money wisely!
Not really bothered about taste and texture of supplements as I don't see them as food to be enjoyed as such, and just get em down my throat!
Would be good to know who the other vegans are and to hear what they do.
Have a good Monday!!
Yeah, buzz and jonathan were the guys i was referring to. They love their pea protein! But TBH, pea protein is lacking in a number of AA's, and i would mix it with something like soy or rice protein to get a better AA profile.

The main limiting a/a in vegetarian diets is Lysine. So by relying on say, rice protein [I believe] you will be a great deal less "diet-efficient" than otherwise. In other words you might be eating a lot of protein but not all of it will be available because the distribution of its a/as is lopsided. The un-matched aminos will go for energy, fat or simply get excreted.
Check out the various profiles for the powders, use whichever one you fancy and then simply eat beans as well! Doesn't really matter which sort since they are pretty Lysine-rich.
Every so often I go into a vegetarian mode for a couple of weeks. I don't eat cereals or fruit but do eat things like rice, peas, beans and weeds in the garden [honest].
My favourite is baked beans and tinned tomatoes with a knob [ie half a packet] of butter stirred in, livened up with some tabasco sauce and a couple of spoonfuls of pea powder stirred in!
[Dunno how totally veggie you are but a bit of grated cheese on top - yum!]
If you want to be a bit experimental - try adding some chopped apples to it all and some onions. Really really nice!!
Got the soy protein today - lovely!!
Hey, nice to see another vegan on the board.
I use mainly pea protein, due to cost and taste. Rice protein is not something that should be permitted to exist, it tastes so bad. Soy is pretty good, but I find it a bit creamy and expensive. Don't use hemp as I cannot afford it.

Gotta agree with Jonathan re: rice protein. Yeah, yeah, yeah its got this and its got that and two billion Chinese [or whatever] can't all be wrong. Etc etc etc. But it tastes like ****.
Hemp is also pretty crap tastewise. [Well to me anyway].
I don't touch soy coz I don't believe the soy marketing board.
Enriched Pea Flour [as it used to be called] is actually not bad at all though! I put it in canned soups and stuff just to balance out the carbs for instance.
Works for me.
I've seen the website that Jonathan mentions. Its good. I didn't realise there were that many members though!
Good luck to each and every one of them!!
Aye, pea all the way for me as well. Cost is good tooUsed to use hemp sometimes, but generally just have ground flaxseed now instead. Never used soy as i figured as a vegan i get a certain amount of soy/soy based products in my diet anyway (though surprisingly little to be honest).
