I have merged a number of threads all asking about body fat percentage as this is another common question that comes up in numerous threads - I will make it a sticky. Here are some graphics showing both average body fat percentages and desirable body fat percentages for both genders and various ages. There is also a graphic showing typical body fat percentages for various athletes and an explanation of why having a very low body fat percentage is not always a healthy thing.

NU, thank you very much for the chart break down for the body fat percentage. This is really useful especially seeing the differenced in what is demeed a good level of body fat for the different ages. Are you able to post any links to the site where you got the data from?

@Lowviz - I should have done that from the get-go really but I had already taken the screenshots and moved onto the next site (there were a few) before I realised putting in links for each would be a good idea! I will try to track them down again and put some links here as an edit. in the meantime here is another one from this site:

EDIT: Here are the other sources for the charts in the earlier post:

Here is a simple body fat test you can perform if you have a measuring tape.

I've just ordered an Accu-measure set of calipers from Ebay, but they're not coming with instructions. I'll be doing my measurements myself.

Does this method and calculation seem as accurate as possible? I'm only really doing this as a rough guide, but I want to keep an eye on my BF% as I definitely store fat around my gut and love handles.

Apologies if this has been covered already in the thread. It's 35 pages long!
