The open water swimming sounds insane. What kind of distances are you hoping to cover? Is there a certain race you really really want to push yourself on to say "YES! I achieved it!" to?
What part of cumbria are you from? I've been up to the lakes a couple of times. Once on a relaxing holiday and another on a team building week in Eskdale. Climbed Pike's Peak, went gorge walking and the such. I absolutely love it up there, such a beautiful part of Britain.
Good luck with your training program, and I expect to see as many gold medals around your neck by the end of the season next year. Otherwise I'm gonna be pelting you with the devil fruit

I swam a 7 mile as my longest last year. I started the 10.5 mile Windermere swim but they pulled us all out because it was too dangerous (3-4ft waves!). 1st time in 52 years it had been stopped. I was swimming really well too!!!! Grrrrrr
I am aiming to do the 22 mile 2 Way Windermere next year. A lovely man who worked with us died last year of cancer and I want to do it as a memorial to him, and to raise money for the local hospice which looked after him at the end because he had no-one but us at work. I am hoping I can do it, I am just concerned about whether my shoulder would actually manage it.
I live in Barrow in Furness which is right on the west coast, but am not far from Coniston really. That's the best lake too.
Nick - don't worry about the sea thing, I am terrified of it!! I had just watched Jaws when I was 7 years old, and my dad was given the choice of working in Turkey or Hong Kong. I kicked up such a stink about the sharks in the harbour in Hong King we had to go to Turkey!Jellyfish too....eeek, no way Jose!
Haven't been nibbled by anything but have been chased by swans! Seen plenty of fish but they tend to keep out of your way. One member of our club encountered a particularly grumpy pike once, but it's pretty rare thank god!
We swim outdoors usually end of May (for the mad people like me) until September...out of those times it is just too cold (we don't wear wetsuits!).

I've just received my Accu Measure calipers. Am going to redo all my measurements on Sunday seeing as this week wasn't the definite start I had hoped for. However, will report on weight loss as I have been following my training and new nutrition plan to the letter.
So I will be able to report better later on my actual progress.
Bit worried with Christmas coming up though. VERY worried actually. Actually, I'm FREAKING OUT!!!!![]()

Thanks for the words on the swimming Delph, up and down windemere would be an awesome achievement. I'm so jealous of where you live. I spent most my childhood hols in and around ambleside then moved on to the duke of endinburghs and spent a good part of my teens drunk on the slopes of helvellan (sp)!!
I absolutly love the place.
Thinking of looking into the long distance swimming in my area.
